Are you ready to take an adventure off the beaten track—literally—in some of Hawai'i's lesser-known spots? If you want to escape the beaches and crowds for a little while, you're going to love our list of exciting, scenic adventure spots!

Mokuleia Firebreak Road (Mauka)

Location: Oʻahu

This drive leads to the Kuaokala and Mokulēʻia forest reserves, which will allow you to get out of the car and explore the surrounding mountains to go for a hike, explore on bike, or go bird watching or camping.

Poamoho Hele Loa Road

Location: Oʻahu

You'll definitely feel the thrills on this narrow dirt road as is winds through mountainous terrain and passes by old pineapple fields, eventually giving way to a native landscape of Uluhe ferns and Koa and Ohia trees, making for a distinctly exhilarating landscape.

Mauna Kea Access Road

Location: Big Island

There is nothing un-scenic about this drive. Lava flows, the Kohala Mountains, elevations ranging from 7,000 to 9,000 feet, and views of Maui and the Waimea Plain provide endless beauty to drivers and passengers as you meander through the Mauna Kea Forest Reserve.

Molokai Forest Reserve Road

Location: Molokai

If you're craving more water-based views, this is the drive for you. See the gorgeous Waikolu Canyon, sea cliffs, and waterfalls (the largest is taller than 3,600 feet). You can also stop and see the Waikolu Lookout and Kamakou Peak, which are part of the Kamakou Preserve. You just may want to pitch a tent and spend the night.
