New for 2017

A newly designed retractable hardtop and new soft-touch leather seats add a feeling of even higher quality to the popular Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Open-air driving fun with a power retractable hardtop

The Miata has been a bestseller over 25 years and three generations. With the debut of the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata in 2016, the manufacturer rebooted its now-iconic sports car with a sharper focus on performance and driving pleasure. Now the automaker continues the model's evolution with a power retractable hardtop like no other on the market. It brings a sense of freedom combined with a reassuring feeling of being wrapped securely in the cabin.

Performance

The powertrain lineup consists of the 2.0- and 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline engines combined with a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter has a maximum output of 155 horsepower with 148 lb-ft of torque.

The double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, along with the Electric Power Assist Steering system, are tuned specifically for the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF. The result is the kind of lively driving performance you would expect along with relaxing comfort and a refined ride.

The sound-absorbing headliner on the inside of the front and middle roof panels combines with sound insulation around the rear wheel housings for a significantly quieter ride, making for the kind of high-quality cabin environment worthy of performance driving enthusiasts.

Features

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF lets you choose from two well-equipped trim levels, the Club and Grand Touring. Highlights of the Club include a six-speed manual transmission, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, Mazda ConnectTM infotainment system, Bose® Audio System with nine speakers including headrest speakers, 4.6-inch full-color LCD display, power windows with one-touch feature, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, black cloth seats with red accent stitching, sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein® shocks, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The Grand Touring model includes everything on the Club with a few upgrades, such as auto on-off headlights, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, body-colored heated side mirrors, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink®, leather-trimmed heated seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Mazda Navigation System, Adaptive Front Lighting System, High Beam Control, and Lane Departure Warning System.

Design

Mazda designers set out with the goal of achieving an entirely new roof design, and the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF delivers with a hardtop body style that has the same level of open-air comfort and freedom found in the soft-top version, starting with a beautiful silhouette. Unlike the soft-top model, the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF will be admired and appreciated for its hardtop styling with the roof closed.

The flowing roofline combines with straight body lines, resulting in an elegant, beautiful fastback silhouette that accentuates its styling. While the overhead roof panels and back window glass are stowed out of sight, the rear roof stays in position when the top is down. This is unlike any other hardtop model and creates a truly unique new design statement. What you get is a pleasing sense of freedom combined with a reassuring feeling of being wrapped securely in the cabin. The enjoyable exhaust note coming from the rear of the car only amplifies the fun of open-air driving.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF doesn’t sacrifice trunk space for the sake of offering a retractable roof. In addition to the efforts to create a beautiful silhouette for the hardtop, the independent trunk can still hold two carry-on bags—the same luggage capacity as the soft-top model.

Inside, the model's designers paid special attention to every detail to ensure its sports car status. Major interior design features include body panels that wrap around and extend into the door trim. The cockpit zone is centered on the driver with all major controls laid out in perfect symmetry.

Safety

Engineers adopted a human-centric perspective in pursuing advanced safety based on the brand’s safety philosophy of Mazda Proactive Safety. The i-ACTIVSENSE® advanced safety technologies found on the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF include Mazda’s Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring system and High Beam Control System which automatically switches between high and low beam as needed. In addition, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is equipped with dual front airbags and side-impact airbags.

Verdict

The fun-to-drive Mazda MX-5 Miata RF with new power retractable hardtop makes open-air driving an even bigger thrill.
