Adventure calls

Whoever said practicality and excitement can't go hand-in-hand clearly never experienced the Dodge Journey. With its extroverted styling and sporty handling for its class, the Journey proves that utility vehicles can be versatile while still providing plenty of capability and fun.

For 2017, the Journey gets a GT trim level that sits atop the model line, while the Crossroad trim receives new satin-carbon wheel finish. Two new colors have also been added to the lineup: Spitfire Orange and Rhino Clear Coat.

Performance

The 2017 Dodge Journey is offered with two engine choices that nicely balance performance and efficiency.

Base models come standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The 3.6-liter “Pentastar” V6 used in numerous other Chrysler vehicles is also available. This engine produces 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and is offered exclusively with a six-speed automatic.

The four-cylinder engine is available only with front-wheel drive and earns an EPA-rated 21 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway).* The Pentastar V6 can also be paired with all-wheel drive. With front-wheel drive, it’s rated at 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway),* while all-wheel drive models are rated at 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway).*

The Journey’s all-wheel drive system really does it all. At low speeds on dry pavement, it reverts to front-wheel drive to save fuel. Above 25 mph, it begins sending power to the rear wheels, including upping the power in response to throttle and steering input in corners to make the car more responsive.

Features

The 2017 Dodge Journey is a five-door, five- or seven-passenger midsize crossover. It’s available in five trim levels, priced starting from $21,145.**

The base Journey SE represents a good value with standard features like roof rails, keyless entry with pushbutton start, 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat, tilt/telescope steering column, 4.3-inch touchscreen display, and steering wheel audio controls.

The Journey SXT builds on the SE with additional standard features like 17-inch alloy wheels, power heated exterior mirrors, three-zone automatic climate control, and other items.

The Crossroad adds some special styling features, including 19-inch wheels, Gloss Black and Platinum Chrome trim, and unique front and rear fasciae. It also features a higher level of standard equipment, with leather seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, overhead console, one-year SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, Uconnect® voice control, and other features.

The Crossroad Plus builds on the Crossroad, incorporating its standard equipment and adding Chrysler’s Uconnect® infotainment system with 8.4-inch touchscreen, and a fold-flat front passenger seat with in-cushion storage.

Finally, the new-for-2017 GT adds unique 19-inch wheels, remote engine start, an exclusive body-color grille, a sport-tuned suspension, automatic headlights , perforated leather upholstery, and sporty red stitching. GT models also boast a heated steering wheel, premium audio system, and a 115-volt power outlet.

Design

Like other crossovers, the 2017 Dodge Journey is basically a box for moving people and stuff. But Dodge’s designers didn’t want to make a boring crossover, so they did everything they could to jazz up the exterior styling and create a high-quality interior.

The front end has a confident look anchored by Dodge’s signature “crosshair” grille, while “ring of fire” LED tail-lights make an equally strong statement at the back. Individual models add their own styling elements, including beefier-looking front and rear fascia on the Crossroad and Crossroad Plus.

On the inside, the Journey offers refinement above its price point. Designers paid attention to small details, adding sculpted center stack bezels, and softening the radius of the stack itself to make room for the driver’s knees. There’s plenty of technology as well, including an Electronic Vehicle Information Center in the gauge cluster and standard 4.3-inch touchscreen (8.4-inch optional).

The interior is very functional as well. Seating for five is standard, with a two-seat third row available as an option on all trim levels. Both rear rows fold flat to create 67.6 cubic feet of cargo space, and the front passenger seat can fold flat as well on certain trim levels. There’s a generously-sized storage bin in the center console, a large front storage bin, and an available in-cushion storage compartment in the front passenger seat.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Dodge Journey includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, electronic roll mitigation, trailer sway damping, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include a rearview camera and park assist.

Verdict
