New for 2017

Updates for 2017 include the addition of two new models—the all-wheel drive GT and retro-inspired T/A, a new standard active exhaust system for Hemi V8 models, and other tweaks and small changes.

Pure American Muscle

The 2017 Dodge Challenger remains one the last true American muscle cars, with Chrysler’s iconic Hemi V8 providing the muscle. The current-generation Challenger features styling inspired by the classic 1971 model, but with modern technology to boost efficiency and make driving more convenient.

Performance

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is all about muscle. The original Challenger was one of the most legendary names during the golden age of American muscle cars, and Dodge has done a good job of reviving that spirit with the current model. The Challenger is available with no less than three versions of Dodge’s Hemi V8, plus a Pentastar V6.

The V6 is the base engine, and it produces 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque. It’s available only with an eight-speed automatic transmission but, while most Challenger models are rear-wheel drive only, the V6 is available with all-wheel drive beginning in 2017. EPA fuel-economy figures for the all-wheel drive model are not available, but rear-wheel drive versions get 23 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway).*

The 5.7-liter Hemi V8 develops 375 hp and 410 lb-ft, and is available with eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmissions. Automatic models are rated at 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway), and manual models are rated at 18 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).*

Dodge also offers a larger 6.4-liter Hemi V8, which it sometimes refers to as the “392,” for its displacement in cubic inches. This engine produces 485 hp and 475 lb-ft, and like the 5.7-liter Hemi it is available with eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmissions. Automatics get 18 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 25 mpg highway), while manuals get 17 mpg combined (14 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).*

The top Challenger model remains the SRT Hellcat, with its 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8. This engine develops a staggering 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, propelling from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds, and to a top speed of 199 mph. The Hellcat is rated by the EPA at 16 mpg combined (13 mpg city, 22 mpg highway) with the eight-speed automatic transmission, and loses 1 mpg in the highway category with the available six-speed manual.*

For 2017, various Challenger models also get new performance parts. The Challenger T/A—itself a new model—gets a cold-air induction system, models with the 6.4-liter “392” Hemi get high-performance Brembo brakes, and all Hemi V8 models get an active exhaust system.

Features

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is a two-door, four-seat coupe. Dodge offers a wide variety of trim levels and options, with no less than 10 distinct models available. Pricing starts at $27,190.**

Standard equipment includes features like LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, reconfigurable driver information display, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, power driver’s seat, 5.0-inch touchscreen display, and Bluetooth®.

In addition to the standard equipment, optional features include Dodge’s Uconnect infotainment system with 8.4-inch touchscreen and available navigation and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, and upgraded audio systems, including nine-speaker Alpine and 18-speaker harman/kardon® systems.

Dodge also offers multiple Challenger models based around the different available engines, with different performance and styling options. That includes “Shaker” models with retro shaker hood scoops, new-for-2017 T/A models, with styling inspired by the classic 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A, and the 707-hp SRT Hellcat model.

Design

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is an homage to the classic first-generation Challenger of the early 1970s. From its split grille with four round headlights, to its unmistakable silhouette, to its retro taillight design, the 2017 Challenger is a spitting image of that car. With its wide stance, low, bunker-like roof line, and big, boxy wheel wells, the Challenger makes for a menacing presence on the road.

The interior takes some cues from the 1971 Challenger, in the form of a high-sill center console and streamlined instrument panel. There were no touchscreens in 1971, but they are standard equipment on the 2017 Challenger. Dodge’s systems are relatively intuitive, and the shape of the dashboard puts the screen within easy reach of the driver.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Dodge Challenger includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, hill start assist, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, park assist, forward collision warning, and a rearview camera.

Verdict

The 2017 Dodge Challenger offers the best of classic American muscle in a modern package.
